Bimal Dasgupta

Bimal Das Gupta was born in Bengal in 1917. Most of his childhood was spent in Behrampur. His family didn’t support his dreams but his passion for arts persuaded him to enrol in the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta in 1937. His education was interrupted by war and he started working as a clerk, but his artistic skills were put to work, and he was assigned the position of Assistant Director in-charge of all artwork in the Victory magazine. He finally acquired his diploma from a college in 1943. He joined Dhoomimal Art Gallery. He became a faculty member at the Delhi College of Art and was associated with the institution for fourteen years.

He expressed his love for arts by saying, “I believe that if an artist has mastered one medium, he can work in others as well. I paint only when I am in the mood. The colours are always there in my heart, an unseen power in the background drives me to put them down on canvas."

His peculiar work of painting landscapes was recognized internationally. His works travelled to Sao Paulo Biennale in 1965, 1970 Expo at MOMA Tokyo, Contemporary Indian Art at Frankfurt, Festival of India at Paris and Moscow in 1985-86. Dasgupta was also commissioned for doing murals at the Indian pavilion of the International Trade Fairs in Moscow and Tokyo. Bimal Dasgupta was honoured with the title of Kala Ratna by All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (AIFACS) in 1988 and the following year, he was made a Fellow at The Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.
